Team 4 said it would reveal the character’s new moniker in an event centered around him later this year. After the Halloween Terror patch dropped last week, attentive players noticed that Team 4 removed most of the voice lines in which the cowboy’s current name is mentioned. There have been some rumblings that the name change was imminent. Rumors suggested that McCree would be renamed to Joel McCloud, which was the character’s name at one point during the development of Overwatch. It’s actually pretty impressive that Team 4 was able to make the switch so quickly. That doesn’t happen overnight, even if a new name was swiftly chosen. Those included “voice lines, localization, UI/UX elements, art assets, checking with the regions for cultural considerations, and publishing aspects.” Last month, Overwatch community manager Andy Belford shared an update on the McCree renaming project in a Reddit comment, explaining that it was taking a while because there were a number of things to change inside and outside of the game. It also seems that nods to ex- Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan (who has not been identified in any allegations) have been taken out of Overwatch 2 map New York City.

References to former World of Warcraft developer Alex Afrasabi, who was accused of serial sexual harassment in the lawsuit, have been removed from WoW. Blizzard said it would remove references to its developers from its games in the wake of California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing lawsuit against parent company Activision Blizzard.
